The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Luke 1:28 (NIV)

The Lord is With You

We can only imagine the emotions that rushed through Mary as the angel appeared with the message from heaven. Yes, she was afraid at the very sight. But, very soon, she would also become afraid of the personal cost to say “yes” to the Lord. She could lose her future husband and her reputation. But, the angel’s greeting came with a blessing of favour. And, the Presence of the Lord himself was with Mary. That would be heaven’s answer to her fears.

Jack Hugh Gillis was inducted into British Columbia’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 – 100 years after he arrived in Vancouver. Known as the Western Giant, the 6’4” tall Gillis joined the Vancouver Police Force in 1906. He also started entering – and winning – “all round” competitions, a combination of several track and field events, similar to decathlons today. The Vancouver Police Force, and all of Vancouver, was proud that Gillis has moved to their city and province and had lived among them.

One of the key themes of the Christmas story is the incarnation – God has stepped into our world. Jesus would be called Immanuel – God with us. This is the ultimate goal that will be brought to completion when He returns and the throne of God takes its place in the midst of the new heaven and the new earth. That has been His ultimate plan – to return to Eden where He walked with Adam and Eve in the garden. In the meantime, by the presence of the Holy Spirit, God is with all who have been redeemed by His grace. So Luke 1:28 tells us: “The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” This is the promise that all of God’s people long for – God’s promise of His abiding presence with us. Mary had been chosen to bear the Messiah – no wonder the angel said she was highly favoured. But through Jesus, God promises to all who love Him that He will be with us. No matter where He leads you today, you can claim this promise that the Lord is with you.
