Words from the Heart for Monday August 9th, 2021
And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
1 John 2:17 (NKJV)
The Eaton’s catalogue was a mail-order catalogue published by Eaton’s department stores from 1884 to 1976. It was “one of the first to be distributed by a Canadian retail store”. The first version of the catalogue was a 32-page booklet handed out at the Industrial Exhibition. Within twelve years, the company’s mail-order department was filling over 200,000 orders per year. Eaton’s actively sought out new subscribers, particularly in rural areas. The demise of the T. Eaton Company and its catalogue is a classic example that nothing in this world abides forever.
We human beings are funny creatures. We want the world to stay the same – some of the most popular videos on youtube are those that take us back to our childhood and our teens. We remember days past with fondness. At the same time we line up for the latest version of our favourite new bit of technology or to see the latest blockbuster movie. We don’t like change, we like change. The reality is that we can’t go back to our childhood – in this world nothing is meant to last forever. Well, there is one thing. The apostle writes in 1 John 2:17: “And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” Human beings are by nature eternal creatures. When God created our first parents, He breathed into them — His breath — and we became eternal. Your dog or cat doesn’t ponder eternity, but your child does from the time they are little. We are faced daily with eternity. Where we will spend eternity depends on what we have done with Jesus. If you have trusted Him, eternal life is yours.
These have been words from the heart.
