See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

1 John 3:1 (NIV)

Children of God

As of 2019, over 1.3 million children in Canada were living in poverty. That number is 17.7% of all the children in Canada – more than one in six. It’s a huge number. If children in poverty had their own province, that province would have a bigger population than Saskatchewan. But children in poverty don’t have their own province, of course: they live in every part of Canada, in every community.

Family is God’s idea. He created our first parents, Adam and Eve, and brought them together, performing the first wedding in the Garden and Eden. He told them to start a family and populate the earth. Now, human families are far from perfect. Even the first family experienced this when Cain, Adam and Eve’s firstborn, murdered his brother Abel. Just the same, human families are a great blessing. It is God’s plan for our best. Healthy families are the foundation of a healthy society. All that God did in designing the human family is so that we might understand His ultimate plan, which was to build a family for Himself. In 1 John 3:1 the apostle writes: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” When we receive Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord we become a child of God. He becomes our Heavenly Father and we become a brother or sister of all others around the world who also have trusted Jesus Christ. What a privilege to be a child of the Living God!
