Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism…”
Acts 10:34 (NIV)
Does Not Show Favoritism
We have all heard of cases of nepotism in the workplace – where someone is shown favouritism because they are related to someone already working there. We don’t often think of the reverse happening, but it did, back in 1988. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the town of Brossard Quebec was wrong in refusing to hire Line Laurin as a lifeguard, simply because her mother was already an employee of the municipality. No favouritism had been shown in her hiring.
Sometimes it takes a lot for us to learn lessons that God wants to teach us. We get so set in our ways, and we don’t really want to change all that much. That was certainly the case with the apostle Peter. He had grown up in a Jewish home where the law was kept including keeping all the dietary laws that God had given to His people through Moses. God had used them to protect His chosen people from illness, and to mark them as His own, but in Jesus He would build a new people from every race, language and nation. That was a hard lesson to learn for Jews who had always seen themselves as special, different, unique. They were God’s favourite and basked in that. So when God called Peter to share the Gospel with the Roman centurion Cornelius, He had to change Peter’s heart. He did it through a vision of a sheet filled with non-kosher foods. Acts 10:34 tells us: “Then Peter began to speak: ‘I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism…'” What is God trying to teach you through His word today?
These have been words from the heart.
