Words from the Heart for Monday April 29th, 2019
He prayed, “O Lord, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are powerful and mighty; no one can stand against you!”
2 Chronicles 20:6 (NLT)
No One Can Stand Against You
Canada has a tradition of standing up against human rights abuses around the globe. In 1991, Indonesian soldiers opened fire on unarmed protesters in East Timor, now Timor-Leste. They had invaded the former Portuguese colony in 1975 and had occupied it ever since, at the cost of more than 100,000 lives. The massacre at the Santa Cruz cemetery in the Timorese capital, Dili, prompted a wave of protest in Canada. The government at the time froze three planned aid projects to Indonesia and stopped permitting Canadian arms sales to the Suharto regime.
The people of Judah were facing a great threat. The armies of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir were lined up against them. What would you do if you were the king of Judah? Jehoshaphat did the right thing – he prayed. And in 2 Chronicles 20:6 we read what he prayed: “O Lord, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are powerful and mighty; no one can stand against you!” What a great prayer of faith! The king was throwing his trust completely on the Lord. It wasn’t that he didn’t have anywhere else to turn. The army of Judah was no pushover. But Jehoshaphat knew that it wasn’t the army that would win the battle – it was the Lord. We need to know that lesson as well. When we are facing a great challenge in our lives, it won’t be our own resources that will assure victory. Only the Lord can do that. So we need to do as Jehoshaphat did and start by coming before the Lord in prayer, trusting Him.
These have been words from the heart.
