Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Hebrews 11:1 NIV

Listen to Words from the Heart

During a recent visit to India, in the midst of some challenging times in diplomatic relations between Canada and India, Dr. Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor of York University in Toronto, said, “We remain confident that the governments of Canada and India will reach a resolution in these diplomatic matters. In the meantime, York continues to communicate closely with our international students of Indian origin to reassure them that Canada and York continue to be safe and welcoming spaces for them.

We put our faith in lots of things on a daily basis. We have faith that oncoming vehicles will stay on their side of the road. We have faith that the bank will keep our money safe. We have faith that the sun will rise in the east and set in the west. That is worldly faith, and it keeps us going day by day. Christian faith is something altogether different, and there is no better definition than what is found in Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” The focus of Christian faith is Jesus, who is the only One who is completely trustworthy. Because we trust in Him, we have complete confidence that everything He has promised is going to come true. Because our trust is in Him, we have assurance, the unbridled confidence, that what we cannot see with our physical eyes, is in fact reality. Non-believers accuse us of blind faith, but there is nothing blind about it. We see Jesus clearly as we put our trust in Him. Jesus is our assurance – our faith in Him is going to be sight one day soon.

These have been words from the heart.
