Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
Ephesians 4:2 (NIV)
Humble and Gentle
Someone asked, on Quora.com, “Are people of Canada really so humble and nice?” Mark Miller, who immigrated to Canada as a child, replied, “Stereotypes are always dangerous because one can always find exceptions. But generally, the culture here supports many virtues, humility and kindness being two of them. I have generally found Canadians to be very helpful and generous and have enjoyed living in Canada very much. It has become my home and I am proud to be called a Canadian.”
Someone once said that it only takes one narcissist to change a lightbulb. They just hold the bulb in place while the universe spins around them. We don’t like to spend time with proud people – their bragging gets old quickly. It is much more pleasant to spend time with someone who is by nature humble and gentle. Those of us who are followers of Jesus are called to emulate the Lord Jesus who was known by all who met Him as humble and gentle. In fact, in Matthew 11:29, Jesus says this: “Take my yolk upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit. Once we come into a relationship with Jesus, and the Holy Spirit takes up residence in us, He starts to make us more and more like Christ. That is why Paul says this in Ephesians 4:2: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” How different would our relationships be if we could be like Jesus in this way. Invite Him to produce in you His humility and gentleness.
