Words from the Heart for Friday October 29th, 2021
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (NIV)
A man in British Columbia was crushed to death by his own car in a McDonald’s drive-through last September in what local police called a “tragic death.” The Vancouver Police Department confirmed that Anthony “Tony” Eyles, a married 42-year-old father of two from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, died Sept. 8. Eyles leaned out of the vehicle to pick up an item that fell as he was trying to pay for his order at a McDonald’s drive-thru window in downtown Vancouver and was crushed by his car, police said.
What a tragic story – I can’t imagine what Mr. Eyles suffered at that McDonald’s drive thru last September. While most of us, thankfully, will never suffer physical crushing like this, all of us go through experiences in life that crush us emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. Life can be so challenging – we lose a loved one, children live lives that break our hearts, we face financial pressures. Listen to what Paul the apostle writes in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” He wrote the letter from Macedonia, after having faced opposition in Corinth, and challenge to his apostleship. Since becoming a follower of Jesus Paul had faced constant opposition and persecution. Through it all, the Lord Jesus had been faithfully providing for Paul all he needed to continue his missionary journeys, planting churches and encouraging the believers. Jesus promises the same for you and me. No matter where He calls us to go and what He calls us to do, no matter how difficult life is, we have the victory through Jesus’ abiding presence and power.
These have been words from the heart.
