They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood.

II Peter 3:5-6 (NLT)

They Deliberately Forget

The Lord is longsuffering and gracious. He delighted in the creation He had made. Yet, when the sin of mankind was dangerously spreading, the Lord even destroyed the world He had created. In mercy, He provided a “saving place” for those who would respond. He still makes salvation available today.

Millions of dollars are spent each year developing new consumer packaged goods and products. In Canada alone last year, 55,000 new items were launched, accounting for an impressive $3.7 billion in retail sales. In spite of the occasional great success of a few new products, most don’t last. An estimated 80 per cent exit the market quickly or soon become vulnerable to being delisted due to poor sales performance. It takes hard work and good planning for a new product to not be forgetten.

It didn’t take long after sin entered into the human experience for men and women to forget about God. In their desire to live a life of sin and selfishness, they turned their back on the God who loved them and desired to be in relationship with them. It didn’t take many generations after Adam for mankind to find themselves a long way from the God who walked daily with their first parents in the Garden of Eden. 2 Peter 3:5-6 says, “They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood.” This is quite an indictment on the entire human race. It isn’t that we have no record of the God who created the world and who judges the sin of the world. The Bible begins with the creation story, after all. In their futile attempt to live without God, they have deliberately forgotten God. We see the results of this on news channels and websites every day.

These have been words from the heart.
