Words from the Heart for Friday November 8th, 2019
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8 (NIV)
It is unlikely that you have never heard of Hiram Crank, but his death in 1905, at the age of 105, had historical significance. He was the last survivor, and witness, to the war of 1812. Crank joined the US army when he was 14 years old, towards the end of the war. His military career lasted only 100 days. He was stationed at Sacket’s Harbor NY, protecting that New York community from another attack by the Canadians and British across Lake Ontario.
When I was a child, I would often hear people say, “My faith is a private thing.” I didn’t think too much about this until I got older and started to read the Bible. I discovered something interesting as I did – nowhere does God tell us that our faith is a private thing. In fact, just the opposite. We are called to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth. We are to share with anyone and everyone what Jesus has done for us. And to empower us to do so, Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8 is the call and the promise: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” I don’t know how the Lord could make it any clearer that His people are to take His message to His world. It’s a good thing somebody in my life and yours took this call seriously – it’s why you and I are followers of Jesus. And there will be others the Lord will lead you today who will become His followers too because you are faithful to this call on your life.
These have been words from the heart.
