Words from the Heart for Friday November 2nd, 2018
But he has given proof of what he is like. He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven. He gives you crops in their seasons. He provides you with plenty of food. He fills your hearts with joy.
Acts 14:17 (NIRV)
The Apostle Paul was presenting the good news of the Gospel to a crowd of people who did not yet know and serve the Lord. He showed them from nature that a Creator God was already showing them kindness. His greatest act of kindness was dying for them on the cross. This is still the good news we share today!
From 1763 until the Canadian Citizenship Act came into force on January 1, 1947, people born in Canada were all British subjects. Since immigrants born in Great Britain and the Commonwealth were already British subjects, they had no need to become naturalized or to obtain British citizenship in Canada. A number of earlier laws governed naturalization before 1947. Under these acts, aliens could petition for naturalization. With the right proof documents, they would swear allegiance to the British sovereign and would be granted the rights of someone born within the British Empire.
People have all sorts of ideas about what God is like. Some see Him as a tyrant who sits on His throne keeping track of all the sin in our lives so He can punish us. Others see Him as a benevolent old man sitting on a cloud playing a harp. Neither of these are correct, of course. The Bible is very clear in its teaching of God’s nature. The apostle Paul, along with his colleague Barnabas, find themselves in the city of Lystra, where a Temple of the Greek god Zeus was located. When Paul healed a lame man the people believed that the gods had come to be with them. But Paul said this in Acts 14:17: ““But he has given proof of what he is like. He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven. He gives you crops in their seasons. He provides you with plenty of food. He fills your hearts with joy.” The One true God isn’t like the vindictive gods of the Greeks. He is intimately concerned about His people, and provides all we need, physically and spiritually. Because He loves us.
These have been words from the heart.
