Words from the Heart for Friday May 22nd, 2020

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Matthew 6:25 (NIV)

Worry

In addition to its serious health consequences, COVID-19 has also caused Canadians to worry about their financial health, according to a survey commissioned by the Angus Reid Institute back in March. 34 percent of respondents said they were worried about missing a rent or mortgage payment because of the virus, which has caused widespread layoffs and a drastic reduction in the amount of paid work available for those who have kept their jobs. 44 per cent said they had either lost work, or someone else who lives in their household had.

I heard the story of an elderly mother who would stay awake each night worried about her children and grandchildren. One night she read in her Bible that God never slumbers or sleeps. She closed her Bible and said to the Lord, “Well, if you’re awake anyway, there no sense both of us staying awake carrying this. I’m going to sleep.” And she did. Worry doesn’t accomplish a thing. How much better to leave it with the Lord. Jesus says this in Matthew 6:25: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” Jesus had just taught His followers to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” When we pray, we need to then act in faith. Whatever it is that we have brought before the Lord, we need to leave it with Him, and walk in faith that He will do what He promises. To carry an attitude of worry doesn’t accomplish a thing. God is awake and He cares. Leave your worries with Him, and live in freedom from fear.
