Words from the Heart for Friday May 21st, 2021
I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you. All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other.
John 13:34-35 (ICB)
A New Commandment
Right and wrong are not black and white for Canadians. Take for instance our feelings about the Ten Commandments. Unsurprisingly, almost three-quarters of us think the Ten Commandments still apply today. But more surprisingly, that includes more than half of Canadians who reject religion. “I found that really interesting,” said Justin Trottier, atheist spokesman for the Canadian Secular Alliance. “Half of the commandments involve belief in God — how to worship God. I wonder if those people know what the Ten Commandments are.”
People always desire something new. Of all the people that understand this, advertisers know it best. They dangle in front of us the desire for what we do not have. The Lord knew it would be a temptation and so He commanded the people of Israel to not covet. All this being said, the heart of the Gospel is that Jesus is going to make all things new – physically, yes, but materially as well. The Kingdom of God is all about transformation. So, it shouldn’t surprise us to read in John 13:34-35 that Jesus is giving us a new command. He says this: “I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you. All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other.” We don’t have to watch the news these days for long to see how often hatred is manifested in our world. It causes our hearts to break when we see how people treat others. As usual, the Kingdom of God turns everything in our sin sick world upside down. How can you obey this command today? Followers of Jesus have no choice.
These have been words from the heart.
