Words from the Heart for Friday May 14th, 2021
Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.
Matthew 7:24-25 (NRSV)
On the Rock
Newfoundland (along with Labrador) is affectionately known as “the rock” since it is an island situated well out in the North Atlantic. But this is no small island – in fact, at 108,860 km² it is one of the largest in the world. Landscape and habitat vary greatly across the island, from the unique limestone barrens of the Great Northern Peninsula to the thick boreal forests of central Newfoundland and the glacial barrens and sheer cliffs that face the raging Atlantic along the coast of the Avalon Peninsula.
Wendy and I were driving through Switzerland a few years ago and as we drove through the mountains, we noticed pretty little Alpine houses built solidly on rock ledges. We commented to each other that this was the perfect example of what Jesus was speaking about in Matthew 7:24-25: “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.” In a day when so much of life seems slippery and unstable, there is a foundation that is unshakeable. The Bible tells us that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. It also tells us that God’s Word is unchangeable. The principles and precepts of the Kingdom of God will support us through time and eternity. When we place our faith and trust in Jesus, and build our lives on what He teaches, we have the assurance that no matter what happens in this world, our lives will have a stability that is out of this world.
These have been words from the heart.
