Words from the Heart for Friday March 6th, 2020
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
John 3:36 (NIV)
Whoever Believes in The Son
Canadians are a measurably religious people. According to the 2011 National Household Survey, about 76 percent of Canadians either claim some sort of religious identity. A 2017 Angus Reid poll similarly found solid majorities of Canadians claiming to believe in fundamental religious concepts like the existence of God, divine intervention, and heaven. Though most Canadians are Christians, rising immigration from countries outside Europe has seen Canada grow far more religiously diverse in recent decades, with increasing numbers of Canadians claiming adherence to traditional Asian and Middle Eastern faiths.
I have always loved the English language. It has a huge and varied vocabulary and some interesting grammar. I learned early on how important tenses are to the English language, and one of the great challenges for those learning English later in life. There is a great example of this in a verse in John’s Gospel – John 3:36. It says “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” Now this is a well known verse, but sometimes I think we miss what it is saying. Notice the verb tense used in the first part of the verse – Whoever believes in the Son HAS eternal life. The moment we put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ, we HAVE eternal life. Eternal life isn’t something in the sweet by and by. It is for us right now. If you have trusted Jesus as your Saviour, He has already given you eternal life. As you live your life today, you have eternal life. That ought to put a spring your step and joy in all that happens today.
