Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

Unswerving

Back in 1941, Winston Churchill expressed his appreciation to Canada for its support of the Allied war effort this way: “Canada is the linchpin of the English-speaking world. Canada, with those relations of friendly, affectionate intimacy with the United States on the one hand and with her unswerving fidelity to the British Commonwealth and the Motherland on the other, is the link which joins together these great branches of the human family, a link which, spanning the oceans, brings the continents into their true relation.”

Watching someone weave from one lane to another as they speed along a highway is disconcerting and frightening. You expect that a few kilometres up the road you are going to see that car in the ditch. And sometimes, in fact, you do. The safest and quickest way to get to your destination is to drive a consistent speed, only passing when necessary. That is the picture that the author of Hebrews paints when he writes about our spiritual lives. In Hebrews 10:23 we read: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” The best way to get to our destination as followers of Jesus – to become like Him in our attitudes and actions – is to hold unswervingly to the hope we profess in Him. We do this by keeping our focus singularly on Him – by staying in His word and by praying without ceasing. There is so much that can get us swerving off path – temptation, the latest spiritual trend, trauma and pain and so much more. Through everything, we are called to hold unswervingly to the hope we have in Jesus. No matter what happens today, keep your focus on Jesus.

These have been words from the heart.
