“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.”

Mark 11:22-23 NIV

No Doubt

At the beginning of 2023, Canadian media company Corus Entertainment Inc. reported a lackluster first quarter primarily dragged down by a dip in advertisement revenue. According to Doug Murphy, the president and chief executive officer of Corus Entertainment, “We are in an advertising recession … no doubt.” The company said revenue fell to $431.2 million in the first quarter of 2023 compared to $463.9 million the year prior. The drop came from the decline in ad dollars within its television division.

We have an interesting idea about mountains. When we are driving between Banff and Jasper, the mountains take our breath away with their majesty and beauty. Around every curve in the Icefields Parkway, there are scenes that make a person quietly breath “wow.” On the other hand, we use mountains as a symbol of huge challenges that seem impossible to overcome. The Bible speaks of mountains this way in Mark 11:22-23: “‘Have faith in God,’ Jesus answered. ‘Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.’” Jesus isn’t speaking about real mountains, of course. Only when He speaks to them as He ushers in the new heaven and the new earth will those mountains be brought low. He is speaking here of the challenges that we all face in our lives that seem impossible. As we trust in God, we discover that God is prepared and able to move those mountains. As He divided the Red Sea waters, so He provides a way through in the most challenging times. Don’t doubt – believe.
