Words from the Heart for Friday June 12th, 2020
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
Matthew 4:19 (NIV)
Come, Follow Me
Early on the pandemic, most Canadians said they were obediently following the COVID-19 rules and regulations. Of the 1,590 adults surveyed between March 27 and 29, the vast majority – 97% – said they were practicing social distancing. 95% said they were keeping at least two meters apart from others, the same percentage who said they were washing their hands more frequently than usual. 94% said they were going out only for necessities and 92% said they were coughing or sneezing into their elbows.
I love reading the stories of how Jesus calls the disciples. He approaches them as they are doing normal, everyday activities – fishing, collecting taxes, spending time with friends, and He simply calls them to follow. There is no sermon with an altar call, just a simple invitation. We read this in Matthew 4:19, “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” I love how Jesus uses what people know the best to call them into His family. The men He was speaking to here were fishermen. They knew how to catch fish. He would spend the next three years or so teaching them how to catch people. Then He would send them out, and using all that He had taught them, they would indeed catch people. Jesus calls us too. First, He calls us to follow Him. I hope you have responded to that call by receiving Jesus Christ by faith as your Saviour and Lord. When you have, allow the Lord to teach you as He did the original disciples. And when you are ready, you will catch men, and women, and children, and introduce them to Jesus as well.
These have been words from the heart.
