Words from the Heart for Friday July 2nd, 2021
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV)
There is Freedom
As a democratic nation, Canada guarantees its citizens both rights and freedoms. What is the difference between the two? A “right” is a common privilege given to all citizens, for example the right to vote, the right to property, the right to worship, the right to information, etc. A “freedom” is when you have no constraints to your actions: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to rebel, freedom to complain, etc.
Even those of us who live in what the world considers “free” are not truly free. There is nothing in this world, not in politics or science of the arts or sports that can liberate the human heart from the bondage of sin that keeps us from enjoying true spiritual freedom. We need human laws to keep our society from completely falling off the rails. That’s because there is nothing in this world that can transform the human heart. Only Jesus Christ can do that through His death and resurrection. The moment that happens, our desire is transformed from doing what our sinful nature longs for – our own rights, our own way, our own desires – to what God longs for – a people who will reflect His nature and who long for what is pure and holy. In this is true freedom. Listen to what 2 Corinthians 3:17: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” When we are born again into God’s family, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in us, and we are set free to be the man or woman of God that Jesus died to redeem and truly set free. He or she whom the Lord sets free is free indeed.
These have been words from the heart.
