My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!

Proverbs 1:10 (NLT)

Turn Your Back

The leaders of Hong Kong are pressuring about 350,000 residents who hold Canadian passports to make an ultimate decision about their citizenship. Under the thumb of Mainland China — which does not allow dual citizenship — the territorial government is squeezing people who have been living and working for decades in the financial hub while holding passports from other nations, most commonly Canada. It’s hard to know how many of these dual citizens will turn their backs on Canada during these challenging times.

Turning your back on someone is considered rude in many circles. Many politicians have had the experience of having people turn their backs to them in protest during a speech. What’s interesting is that the Bible speaks about turning our backs. Listen to what King Solomon counsels in Proverbs 1:10: “My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!” So much of temptation is visual. Marketers understand this. They work hard at making ads beautiful and enticing. Most of that is benign, but if marketers understand this, so does the enemy of our souls. Satan never shows the ultimate outcome of sin – he knows what entices us and makes it look tempting. So, Solomon gives us some great wisdom. The best way to avoid yielding to temptation is to turn our backs to it, to not gaze upon that which will trip us up in our Christian walk. We need to know where we are weak. We need to be self-aware about where our spiritual armour is thin. And when temptation comes our way in those areas, we must immediately turn our backs on it, so it has no potential to find its way into our mind and heart.
