Words from the Heart for Friday January 15th, 2021
Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.
Proverbs 19:20 (NIV)
Listen and Accept
In 2018, the vast majority of Canadians were still tuning in to traditional radio. When asked about their use of radio and audio services, 88% of Canadians aged 18+ reported having listened to the radio in any given month. While streaming music videos on YouTube remains popular and listening to personalized online music services continued to rise in popularity in 2018, reaching 55% and 38%, respectively, of Canadians aged 18+, both types of online services have yet to reach as many Canadians as traditional radio.
None of us like discipline. I watch my grandsons as they are put into time out, and none of them enjoy it. They sit and sulk, looking like the world is about to come to end. But I’ve never seen it not work. Short term pain for long term gain. Within a few minutes, they have settled down, are repentant, or at least sorry for whatever they had done to get them sent to time out, and are ready to get up and get back to enjoying life. It isn’t any different as we grow older. We don’t like discipline either. For us, it’s usually the discipline of exercise or study, or prayer. But as we set our minds and hearts to it, we find that we are becoming the man or woman that God desires us to be, and life is so much better. In Proverbs 19:20, Solomon writes these wise words: “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.” Whatever discipline God is calling you to, whether its discipline because of sin or in order to become more the man or woman of God, accept it. You will be counted among the wise.
