Words from the Heart for Friday February 19th, 2021
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23:6 (NLT)
In the House of the Lord
The oldest church in Ontario is Her Majesty’s Royal Chapel of the Mohawks on the Six Nations Reserve. This chapel, the first Protestant church in Ontario, was built by the Crown for the Mohawks of the Six Nations Iroquois. It replaced the Queen Anne Chapel at Fort Hunter, New York, which the Mohawk lost, along with their lands, as a result of their alliance with the British during the American War of Independence. It is the only Royal Chapel in North America.
King David had a great desire to build the Temple where God would take up residence. He wanted to honour the Lord by doing so. But God said no – he was a man of war, and God’s House would be built by David’s son Solomon – a man of peace and great wisdom. But David understood that human beings are eternal beings. Even though David wouldn’t live long enough to see the Jerusalem Temple built, he wrote this in Psalm 23:6: “Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.” The ultimate house of the Lord was not in Jerusalem. Over and over again the Bible speaks of the spiritual Temple in Glory. The day is coming when the new heaven and the new earth will be combined so that all who have been redeemed by faith in Jesus Christ will live forever in the presence of Triune God. What a promise in this beloved Psalm – in this life we experience God’s goodness and unfailing love and when this life is over we will enjoy the eternal presence of our loving God. Hallelujah.
