Words from the Heart for Friday February 15th, 2019
You must not defile the land where you live, for I live there myself. I am the Lord, who lives among the people of Israel.
Numbers 35:34 (NLT)
Where the Lord Dwells
Michael Barnard of Quora was asked what percentage of Canadians live within 160 kilometers of the Canadian border. He looked at the largest 100 cities in Canada and 84 of them, with a population of almost 19 million were within that range. That’s 87.4% of the total population of those 100 cities. In Barnard’s words “Given that 80% of Canada’s populace lives in towns larger than 10,000, we can assume that the proportion holds fairly true.” Population-wise this would mean that around 32 million Canadians live within a two-hour drive of the USA border.
God chose the Israelites as the people through whom He would reveal Himself to the entire world. He took up residence among them, eventually filling the Holy of Holies in the Temple in Jerusalem. It must have been overwhelming for the people of Israel to know that the Creator of the world had manifested His presence in their midst. But His holy presence demanded something of them as well. Numbers 35:34 says, “”You must not defile the land where you live, for I live there myself. I am the Lord, who lives among the people of Israel.” The people of Israel were called to be holy so that that nations around would know the character of their God. If that was the case for the Israelites, how much more is it for us? Those of us who have become followers of Jesus have His holy presence right inside us. No matter where we go, no matter what we do, the great God of the universe is with us. Knowing that ought to drive us to our knees and protect us from the temptations that so often come our way.
These have been words from the heart.
