Words from the Heart for Friday December 27th, 2019

And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.”

Revelation 5:9 (NIV)

Joyful Praise

Back in 2017, 44 year old John Matunga, said that his first Christmas in Ottawa was the best one he’s ever had. Wearing a suit, tie and novelty Santa hat that drew laughter from his wife Bijou, he said, “It’s the happiest ever. I’ve never enjoyed such a good Christmas.” Matunga is a government-sponsored refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He and Bijou fled regional violence in Congo with their three youngest children this fall, arriving in Ottawa in October of that year.

I recently read through the book of Revelation once again, and something struck me as I read about all that was taking place around the throne of God – this is not a quiet place. If you picture the heavenly mansion as a nice quiet place of reflection and introspection, that is not the picture painted by the book of Revelation. Let me illustrate. Revelation 5:9 says, “And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.” First, there is singing by the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures, each playing a harp. They are soon joined by many angels numbering thousands upon thousands, and by the time we get to verse 12, they are crying out with a loud voice. There is a reason for this, of course. It is found in our text for today: “with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.” This is worth all the praise and adoration possible. Get ready for an eternity of joyful praise.

These have been words from the heart.
