Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

Followers of Jesus have always struggled with the demand of Jesus to live a life of holiness and purity. The moment we become followers of Jesus we are called to fully commit our lives – body, mind and spirit – to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. As the old expression says, “if Jesus isn’t Lord of all, He isn’t Lord at all.” The apostle certainly understood this, and so wrote in 1 John 2:4-6: “Whoever says, ‘I know him,’ but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” John sure doesn’t pull any punches here. If you say you are a follower of Jesus, but it doesn’t make any difference in the way you are living your life, you are a liar. Wow. No grey area here. I don’t know how John’s writing here grips you, but it causes me to examine my life to make sure I line up with Jesus.
These have been words from the heart.
