Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.

Enter His Gates

The Gate of Harmonious Interest is the entrance to Victoria’s Chinatown, the oldest in Canada. The gate stands 38 feet high and was erected in 1981 in commemoration of Chinatown’s revitalization by the City of Victoria and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. Two hand-carved stone lions, gifts from Victoria’s Twin City, Suzhou of the People’s Republic of China, guard either side of this elaborately detailed red and gold gate. Two time-capsules, to be opened in 2081 and 2096, are encapsulated in each outer red pillar.

The Jewish people would travel from throughout Israel a few times a year, at least for the festivals, coming up to Jerusalem to celebrate. From villages and town, shepherds’ fields, olive gardens and grape orchards, they would make their way into the Holy City. I can’t imagine how wonderful it must have been to enter those city gates, experiencing the busyness of the city. Crowds, hawkers, shop owners, religious leaders and politicians. And the epitome of it all – the Temple. That ancient city was just a picture, however, of what awaits all who love the Lord Jesus. King David, who had the uncanny ability to see the future, used that common experience to point to something that was going to be far greater. In Psalm 100:4 he wrote: “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.” There will come a day when all who have been redeemed by the Lord Jesus will enter those infinite gates, into His eternal presence. The praise will be unimaginable. In the meantime, take time today to enter into His presence – with thanksgiving and with praise.

These have been words from the heart.
