Words from the Heart for Friday April 17th, 2020
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Matthew 5:6 (NIV)
Those Who Hunger and Thirst
The most recent results from the Canadian Community Health Survey show 1 in 8 households in Canada (12%) have experienced food insecurity in the previous 12 months. This means that 3.2 million Canadians are impacted by food insecurity. To put that into perspective, that is just under the combined total population for both Toronto and Vancouver. Too many people buy fruits and vegetables at the beginning of the month but subsist on crackers and noodles by the end of the month.
For the past two Easters, I’ve visited South Sudanese refugee camps in northern Uganda. It is not easy to emotionally process all that I experienced there. I will never forget one woman telling me that the United Nations provides them with one month of food every two months. I can’t begin to understand what real hunger is, but that woman and the millions of others around the world living in refugee camps experience it daily. In a spiritual sense, that is what Jesus is driving at in Matthew 5:6 when he says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Only when we recognize that we are truly starving to death spiritually will we experience the fullness of Jesus. When we come to Him with a sense that we are perishing, He will fill us to overflowing with His love, His grace, His presence. Too many people don’t realize the depth of their spiritual need. Those who do, who truly hunger and thirst after the righteousness that is only found in Jesus, will be filled. When was the last time you came to Him like that?
These have been words from the heart.
