Working for God

WorkForGodBlog

For some, work is simply a routine part of our lives. We wake up, get ready, head to work, put in our nine hours and then head home again, all to make ends meet. For others, work has become our identity; we put in so many hours and so much energy to gain personal achievement and success. God wants work to be so much more for us, however, to work hard and to find pleasure in our labour.

God has been encouraging his children to work hard since the earth was created. In Genesis 2:15, after God created Adam, “the LORD God took [him] and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Adam was expected to help vegetation and animals grow and inhabit the garden, and did so while bringing glory to God! This is how we need to approach our work and utilize the gifts that God gave us.

God’s Amazing Work: You!

There are several verses in the Bible that show just how much God is at work. God was at work when He created the heavens and the earth, and when he crafted each and every one of His children. Isaiah 64:8 says, “yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” Think of how much God delighted in this work!

When we begin to question our purpose and who we are in our work, remember that we were created by a loving God and that our identity can be found in Him. Our worth does not come from the projects we complete or the sales we bring in; it comes from the love and grace of God. He is our passion and our purpose.

Worship While You Work

So what can we do to put God first as we head to work? As we go about our day and invest time and energy into our tasks, remember that God is with you. God not only loves seeing us utilizing the talents and skills that He gave us, but He loves being with us throughout the day and being welcomed into our work. We also have the opportunity to worship Him while we work, as we dedicate our work to God and show love and grace to others. Some days can be stressful and overwhelming, but when we choose to look to God for patience and assistance, we can recognize His presence in our work and find comfort.

As you head to your office today, know that God is with you in the tasks that bring glory to Him! He has created you to succeed and you can do so in Him.

May the favour of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us-yes, establish the work of our hands.

Psalm 90:17 (NIV)
